Rosetta Lucas Quisenberry Releases Black Saga Series of Books
October 17, 2003

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Native Rosetta Lucas Quisenberry and Q&Q Distributors are pleased to announce the completion of the Black Saga series of books. The final three volumes, A Saga of the Black Woman, A Saga of the Black Child, and A Saga of the Black Family, are due for release October 25, 2003. Each volume, ranging from 80-112 pages showcases postcards, photographs and memorabilia from Mrs. Quisenberry’s museum-quality collection of American artifacts, all reproduced in full color.

Postcards, produced from the late 1880s through the 1950s, and memorabilia reflect the era’s negative and stereotypical portrayal of African-Americans, while the antique photographs highlight positive images of African-Americans during the same period. As single volumes or the complete series, the Saga books remind us of our past and promote empathy and understanding between diverse groups and generations.

A history teacher in the Fayette County School system for more than 14 years, Mrs. Quisenberry saw her first racist postcard 26 years ago at an antique show in a local mall, and has since collected more than 1,000 cards.

“You cannot imagine the shock and shame I felt when I saw that postcard,” said Mrs. Quisenberry. “I bought all 20 cards the dealer had just to get them off the market and protect ‘my people.’ Since then I have changed my attitude from wanting to rid the world of these evil images to feeling compelled to display them so that all people can gain a better understanding of each other. I want to make it perfectly clear that the purpose of these books are not to foster more hatred - there is already enough hatred and misunderstanding between the races. My desire is to bring us together by promoting empathy and understanding of each other’s past.”

After she self-published her acclaimed first volume, A Saga of the Black Man, in September 2002, reader demand was so great for the next book, Mrs. Quisenberry decided to release the remaining volumes at the same time. The latest books will be unveiled at the First Annual A Saga of the Black Man Bookfair and Bazaar, to be held at Winburn Park in Lexington on October 25, 2003 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. The event will feature local authors and artists. Admission is free and booth space is available.
